I have spoken directly to NSW irrigators who are deeply concerned by yesterday’s surprise Federal Government announcement to list the Lower Murray River and Macquarie Marshes ecosystems as critically endangered. This comes at a critical time, when governments are working to finalise key documents that will decide the future of the Murray–Darling Basin.
Irrigators are feeling this uncertainty every day. Water users need clarity, certainty and consultation.
The experience of growers in NSW is that policies created or changed without on-ground consultation with affected stakeholders almost always result in unintended consequences.
These consequences can directly impact our ability to continue growing food and fibre for the nation and the world.
NSW irrigators are calling on all levels of government to deliver meaningful and transparent consultation before any further decisions are made. The time is now for NSW and Federal governments to do more, and to be proactive in how they engage with and communicate to water users.
